Anistratov Big Medieval Dudelsack

A Resplendent Revival of a Timeless Voice

Offered in two stately tunings — A/G and D/C — the Anistratov Big Medieval Dudelsack (Markt Sackpfeife) is a masterfully crafted instrument inspired by the evocative imagery found in Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts. Drawing upon these historic sources, Alexander Anistratov has meticulously reimagined and reconstructed this noble bagpipe, infusing it with both authenticity and innovation.
Ideal for the performance of medieval repertoire — including the Cantigas de Santa Maria and other treasures of early music — the instrument evokes the rich textures and spiritual grandeur of centuries past. Yet it is far more than a mere reproduction.
In the mid-1980s, this style of bagpipe experienced a resounding return to prominence, owing much to its visual splendour and formidable acoustic presence. Towering in both scale and sound, it reclaimed the attention of audiences across Europe, becoming a favourite in historical festivals, open-air performances, and theatrical productions for its bold character and sheer sonic authority.
Crucially, Alexander has undertaken a series of internal refinements to elevate the instrument beyond historical fidelity. Through the precise reconfiguration of bore dimensions and the careful sculpting of the internal airflow architecture, he has achieved an instrument of remarkable tonal clarity and tuning stability — even at moderate air pressure. This allows for sustained, expressive play without compromising the robust resonance for which the Dudelsack is famed.
With its commanding presence, rich voice, and thoughtfully engineered interior, the Anistratov Big Medieval Dudelsack stands not merely as a nod to the past, but as a celebration of living tradition — refined, resonant, and resplendently reborn.

A Harmony of Materials, Tradition, and Craft

Each Anistratov Dudelsack is crafted with unwavering attention to both tonal character and aesthetic integrity, employing one of three select timbers: Maple, Pear, or the richly grained Castello Boxwood. These distinguished hardwoods are carefully chosen not only for their acoustic properties but also for their visual warmth and historical authenticity.

To evoke the noble patina of time, all wooden components undergo a traditional acid staining process, bestowing upon the instrument the dignified appearance of an heirloom — as though it might have resounded in a medieval court or accompanied a procession through a stone-clad cloister.

The Dudelsack is offered in a variety of configurations to suit the needs of both solo performers and ensemble players. The Basic Set is fitted with a single bass drone, while the Standard Set typically includes two drones — either bass and baritone, or bass and tenor — providing a fuller harmonic foundation.

Each instrument is equipped with a meticulously carved wooden chanter as standard. In keeping with the Anistratov workshop’s commitment to tonal cohesion and visual unity, all parts — from chanter to drones — are fashioned from the same species of wood, ensuring a seamless marriage of sound, form, and finish.
